At this home in Altea, we installed two electric roller shutters for an enclosed section of the terrace. The large glass panels here received a lot of sun and could not yet be fully closed off.
The roller shutters were custom-made and finished in white, so that the boxes and the guides to match the home's existing structure.
Roller shutters for a large glass frontage
Large windows provide plenty of light, but direct sunlight also lets in considerable some heat inside. With a roller shutter, the glass frontage can be completely shaded when the sun is shining on it.
Unlike a screen, a roller shutter can be closed completely. That provides not only shade but also complete privacy. As soon as the roller shutter is raised again, it when it rises, the glass and the view remain completely unobstructed.
Electric operation
Because of the size and weight of the roller shutters, electric operation was the most practical choice. The roller shutters can be opened and closed without a pull strap or opened and closed using a manual crank.
This makes it easy to adjust them throughout the day. With direct sun, the roller shutters can be lowered fully or partially. When the sun moves away from the the façade has disappeared, they can be opened again.
Installation against the existing structure
Beforehand, we measured the openings and available installation space. We also checked the position of the roller shutter boxes, the side guides and the existing white profiles around the glass panels.
During installation, both roller shutters were fitted and adjusted separately. The slats were then checked to ensure they run smoothly through the guides and that the stop the roller shutters at the correct end positions.
The final result
The two roller shutters now close off the entire glass frontage. Thanks to the white in the chosen finish, the boxes and guides are barely noticeable against the existing construction.
During the day, the residents can protect the terrace area from direct sunlight and fully close them in the evening for more privacy. When the roller shutters are open, the passage to the outside remains completely clear.

We preferably view samples alongside the window frame, façade brick, and interior. Bright Spanish light changes colours considerably. Neutral shades can appear warmer or cooler, and dark materials become hotter; we take this into account without turning personal taste into a technical fairy tale.
Manual, electric, or solar
Manual operation is simple, but electric operation can be much more convenient for large or frequently used systems. Solar is particularly interesting when cabling is difficult. The size, weight, frequency of use, and available position for a solar panel determine whether it is a sensible option.

Do not leave a product rolled up or folded while wet for extended periods, and check after strong winds that everything moves freely. Addressing noise, misalignment, or stiffness early often prevents more serious damage.
Common mistakes with custom-made sun protection and insect screens
A common mistake is ordering based on a rough wall opening. Frames are not always straight, tile edges may protrude, and a roller shutter or door handle may sit precisely within the movement area. Wind resistance is also sometimes treated as an absolute figure, even though dimensions, installation, façade position, and correct use together determine what is responsible.
A second mistake is choosing the cheapest system first and only then considering power, installation, and controls. This can result in visible cables, an awkward crank, or a cassette that obstructs the door. With custom work, the complete usage situation should be determined before production.
Combining solutions for a cooler, more comfortable home
Outdoor sun protection works most effectively when heat is blocked before it enters through the glass. This can be combined with indoor sun protection for atmosphere and privacy. Insect screens then make it possible to ventilate during cooler hours without an invasion of mosquitoes. The products therefore fulfill different functions and can actually reinforce one another.
With multiple façades, the same system does not need to be used everywhere. A zip screen may make sense on a large glazed façade, a roller shutter in a bedroom, and a pleated insect screen door at the frequently used patio door. By coordinating the color and controls, the overall appearance remains calm, while each opening receives the technically appropriate solution.
