Start with the façade orientation

The sun’s path, the use of each room and the views all help shape the solution. These are the first considerations for a Mediterranean design.

East

Low morning sun. Consider vertical screens for bedrooms and workspaces while retaining the daylight needed.

South

High summer sun. Match the depth of an overhang or pergola to the façade and consider the winter light you want to admit.

West

Low afternoon and evening sun. Include vertical screens for glazing and the open sides of a terrace.

North

Less direct sunlight. Start with daylight, privacy and glare; also check early and late summer sun.

We assess each location individually: neighbouring buildings, glazing, wind exposure and how the space is used also matter.

Design the façade and terrace together

Screens for glazed façades

Allow space for the cassette and guides, wiring and maintenance access. Choose fabric and controls around light, privacy and views.

Pergola with vertical screens

Combine overhead shade with protection from low side sunlight. Coordinate columns, fixings, power and drainage early.

Pergola with sliding glass walls

Add transparent shelter. Plan tracks, panel parking space and drainage alongside ventilation and shading: glass alone does not keep out solar heat.
