Many homes on the Costa Blanca have an existing tile floor. Those who want to renovate without demolition often choose PVC. PVC floors are therefore increasingly chosen for renovations of homes and apartments on the Costa Blanca.
The question we get daily in our showroom in Altea:
“Can we just install PVC over the tiles?”
The honest answer:
That depends entirely on the subfloor.
Why installing PVC over tiles seems attractive
PVC is:
-
Thin build-up
-
Warm underfoot
-
Quiet in use
The idea of not having to demolish is understandable. Less dust, less work, less inconvenience.
But with PVC, one important rule applies:
The subfloor determines the final result.

The biggest risk with PVC over tiles: telegraphing of joints
In Spain, we often see larger and deeper joints than in Northern Europe. When PVC is installed directly over tiles without leveling, these joints and tile edges almost always become visible. This problem frequently occurs in homes on the Costa Blanca where PVC floors are installed over existing tile floors.
This is called telegraphing.
Important:
This usually does not only appear over time — it is often visible immediately after installation.
Also, small height differences between tiles can show through the top layer.
What looks flat to the eye is often technically not flat enough for a PVC floor.
Temperature differences in Spain
In the Mediterranean climate, indoor temperatures can rise significantly in summer. PVC reacts to temperature and can expand or deform if the subfloor is not stable. This is an important reason why installing PVC over tiles in Spain requires extra attention.
Cheaper or thinner floors can:
-
More expansion
-
Faster deformation
-
Problems occur with click-PVC connections
That is why we often recommend a glued (dryback) PVC floor on a stable, flat subfloor. In homes on the Costa Blanca, we often see that leveling is necessary before installing a PVC floor.

When is leveling necessary?
In many situations, leveling is not a choice but a technical necessity before a PVC floor can be installed.
Leveling is necessary when:
-
Tiles show height differences
-
Joints are deep or wide
-
The subfloor is not completely flat
-
There are damaged or hollow-sounding tiles present
-
When you choose glued (dryback) PVC
PVC follows the subfloor. Every unevenness will eventually show through the floor.
A leveled subfloor ensures:
-
A smooth final result
-
Optimal adhesion
-
Less stress in the material
-
A longer lifespan
-
Less risk of complaints
Leveling increases the initial investment but prevents problems and corrections later on.
In homes on the Costa Blanca with existing tile floors, leveling is often a necessary step before installing a PVC floor.

Is Jumpax an alternative to leveling?
In certain renovation situations, a pressure-resistant underlayment like Jumpax® can be an alternative to wet leveling.
Jumpax consists of cross-glued panels that create a stable base for glued PVC floors.
Jumpax can be suitable when:
-
The tile floor is fully fixed
-
Only slight unevenness is present
-
No wet leveling is desired
-
The space needs to be used again quickly
Advantage: no drying time like with leveling compound.
Important to know
Jumpax does not correct large height differences.
-
Deep joints often need to be filled first
-
Level differences remain visible if not prepared
-
Loose tiles must always be repaired first
Additionally, Jumpax increases the floor height, which can affect doors, baseboards, and floor transitions.
In situations with larger unevenness, full leveling remains the most stable solution.
What does PVC over tiles roughly cost?
The total investment of a PVC floor over tiles consists of several parts:
PVC floor (material)
Depending on brand, wear layer, and design.
Leveling or underlayment
Depending on the condition of the subfloor.
Baseboards and finishing
Baseboards, transitions, door trimming, and finishing determine the final result.
Labor
Preparation, installation, and finishing ultimately determine the floor’s durability.
Those who only look at the price per m² of PVC get an incomplete picture. The subfloor and installation determine most of the final quality.
