Roller shutter stuck or won’t go up anymore?
A roller shutter that suddenly gets stuck or no longer goes up happens more often than you think. Especially on the Costa Blanca, roller shutters endure a lot due to sun, salt, sand, and intensive use.
Sometimes the cause is easy to fix. In other cases, repair is needed to prevent further damage.
On this page, we explain the most common problems and the possible solutions.
The roller shutter is hard to operate
When a roller shutter starts to become harder to operate, this is often an early sign that maintenance is needed.
Common causes are:
- Dirt and sand in the guides
- Salt deposits from the sea air
- Worn parts
- Lack of maintenance
The longer this continues, the greater the chance of damage to the motor or suspension.

The motor makes noise but the roller shutter does not move
If you hear the motor running but the roller shutter stays in place, the problem is often not with the motor itself.
Common causes are:
- Detached suspension springs
- Damaged suspension systems
- Seized axle
- Internal damage to the mechanism
In many cases, this can be repaired without replacing the entire roller shutter.

The roller shutter does not respond at all
When an electric roller shutter no longer responds, the cause can be in various places.
Consider, for example:
- A defective remote control
- Power supply problems
- A defective switch
- A worn motor
For solar roller shutters, an empty or defective battery can also be the cause.

The roller shutter hangs crooked
A crooked hanging roller shutter should always be taken seriously.
This is often caused by:
- Damaged slats
- Detached suspension springs
- Wear on the system
- A blockage in one of the guides
Continuing to use the roller shutter can quickly worsen the damage.
Roller shutters have a hard time on the Costa Blanca
Many malfunctions occur because roller shutters are exposed daily to extreme conditions.
Salt from the sea air, sand, dust, and strong sun cause parts to wear out faster than in Northern Europe.

Fix it yourself or call a specialist?
You can sometimes remove minor dirt in the guides yourself. For electrical malfunctions, seized systems, or a crooked hanging roller shutter, we advise having a specialist take a look to prevent further damage.
A small malfunction is often cheaper to fix than a complete replacement.
When is replacement wiser?
Sometimes repair is no longer the most economical solution. Especially with older systems, replacement can ultimately be more cost-effective.
