Having a PVC floor installed over existing tiles

When renovating, the first question is almost always: can we install a PVC floor over the tiles without removing everything?

The honest answer is: yes, that is possible. But only if it is done properly. And that is exactly where things often go wrong.

Why tiles are not a level subfloor

At first glance, a tiled floor looks smooth and level. In practice, this is almost never the case. The joints are often deeper than you think, the tiles are not perfectly level everywhere and in some cases there is even slight movement in the subfloor. You do not notice this immediately when walking over it, but a PVC floor makes it mercilessly visible.

If you install PVC directly over tiles, the lines of the joints will become visible through the floor almost immediately after installation. Unevenness will show and the overall appearance will look unsettled. We call this telegraphing. Once this has happened, it cannot be corrected without redoing everything.

Temperature differences and the subfloor can cause a click floor to expand and move more. That is why, in practice, we almost always choose a glued-down PVC floor. The Spanish climate also plays a major role. Plenty of sunshine, higher temperatures and large glass surfaces place more strain on the floor than in the Netherlands. This means that not only the floor itself is important, but especially how it is installed and which materials are used.
