PVC herringbone flooring over tiles in La Nucía
This home in La Nucía had tiled flooring throughout. The residents wanted a warmer look, but removing the existing floor was not necessary. We prepared the tiled floor and installed glued PVC herringbone flooring was installed.
First, inspect the existing tiled floor
At first glance, the tiled floor seemed like a good base. During the inspection, we only found a few loose, hollow-sounding tiles. The rooms also the rooms were not all at the same level and there were quite a few curves in the home.
You cannot simply lay PVC over it. Anything that moves beneath the floor or is not flat, this may later become visible in the PVC.
Preparing and levelling the tiled floor
We first secured the loose sections and thoroughly prepared the tiled floor. The entire floor was then levelled. This removed the joints and we could also correct the differences in height between the rooms.
With glued herringbone flooring, the subfloor really must be flat. The strips are relatively small, so imperfections are more noticeable than with a regular straight plank.

Installing the PVC herringbone flooring
Once the levelling compound was dry and flat, the new floor could be installed. For this home, glued PVC, also known as dryback PVC, was chosen. The herringbone pattern was laid from a fixed line and continues through the different rooms in the home.
The round walls and curved doorways made this project particularly special. Each strip along these curves had to be cut individually and made to fit. That takes more time, but it is precisely in the finishing touches that you can see the difference.

The end result
The old tiled floor is no longer visible anywhere, and the herringbone pattern flows beautifully from one room to another. The calm wood colour gives the home a much warmer look, while the home's rounded shapes are enhanced stand out beautifully.

What should you really consider when installing a herringbone PVC floor over tiles in La Nucía?
A good choice does not start with colour alone. We also assess the construction, wear layer, dimensional stability, pattern repetition, and suitability of click or dryback flooring. These factors determine whether a floor remains stable after installation, feels comfortable to walk on, and suits the home's daily use. Especially in an apartment, holiday home, or villa on the Costa Blanca, sun exposure, temperature differences, and an existing tiled floor can influence the technical choice.
Therefore, do not ask only for a price per square metre. Check what is included in the offer: subfloor preparation, levelling, underlay, adhesive, skirting boards, cutting waste, transport, and installation. Two quotes for the same area may technically include completely different work.
The subfloor determines the final result
A new floor always depends on the quality of the base. Loose tiles, deep grout joints, differences in height, residual moisture, and cracks must be assessed beforehand. A level floor is not automatically a suitable floor; stability and adhesion are at least as important. During renovations, we also consider doors, sliding doors, kitchen plinths, and connections to other rooms.
By measuring accurately in advance, we prevent surprises during installation. We record what preparation is required and which system is technically logical. Sometimes direct installation is possible; in other cases, leveling or localized repairs are necessary. You cannot see this honest distinction on a small color sample, but you will see it later in the result.
