Choosing a floor is one thing. Installing it correctly is often a completely different matter.

Many people nowadays buy flooring themselves online, from a DIY store or directly from a supplier. On paper, installing PVC flooring, parquet flooring or carpet often seems simple, until it becomes clear in practice how much difference proper preparation and professional installation make.

In Spain in particular, there are additional challenges to consider. Existing tiled floors, temperature differences, uneven subfloors and large open spaces mean that installing a floor here is often more specialized than people expect beforehand.

Laying a floor involves more than just clicking or cutting

Many floors nowadays appear easy to install. Click PVC in particular is often sold as if it can simply be “laid quickly.”

In practice, we regularly see homes where people discover halfway through a renovation that:

the floor is not level enough,
grout lines become visible later,
a herringbone pattern does not line up properly,
joints start to shift,
or the finishing turns out to be far more specialized than expected.

That does not mean the flooring is poor quality — but it does mean that the preparation and installation ultimately determine how flawless the final result will be.

Floor leveling and preparation

Many problems arise not while laying the floor itself, but with the subfloor underneath.

Many homes on the Costa Blanca still have ceramic tiled floors with deep grout lines or small differences in height. If the subfloor is not properly prepared, imperfections often remain visible in the new floor.

Where necessary, we first level the existing floor before installing a new one.

What should you really look out for when having a floor installed on the Costa Blanca?

A good choice does not start with colour alone. We also assess the subfloor, intensity of use, maintenance, acoustics, thermal resistance, and desired appearance. These factors determine whether a floor remains stable after installation, feels comfortable to walk on, and suits the home's everyday use. Especially in an apartment, holiday home, or villa on the Costa Blanca, exposure to sunlight, temperature differences, and an existing tiled floor can influence the technical choice.

Therefore, do not ask only for a price per square metre. Check what is included in the quotation: subfloor preparation, levelling, underlay, adhesive, skirting boards, cutting waste, transport, and installation. Two quotations for the same surface area may technically cover completely different things.

The subfloor determines the final result

A new floor always depends on the quality of the foundation. Loose tiles, deep grout lines, differences in height, residual moisture, and cracks must be assessed beforehand. A level floor is not automatically a suitable floor; stability and adhesion are at least as important. During renovations, we also consider doors, sliding doors, kitchen plinths, and connections to other rooms.

By taking precise measurements in advance, we prevent surprises during installation. We record what preparation is required and which system is technically appropriate. Sometimes direct installation is possible; sometimes levelling or local repairs are necessary. You cannot see this honest distinction on a small colour sample, but you will notice it in the final result.

Quality through Dutch suppliers

Port of Altea imports high-quality collections through Dutch suppliers. This allows us to offer materials with clear technical information, reliable collections, and finishes that are not always available in the local standard range. That does not mean that every expensive floor is automatically good: the product must also suit the room and the installation method.

At our showroom in La Nucía, you can view samples in daylight and compare different qualities side by side. If possible, bring photos, a floor plan, and approximate measurements. This allows us to give much more targeted advice on the material, colour, pattern, and expected preparation.

Practical checks before you decide

Which rooms are included, and how intensively will they be used?
Is there currently tile flooring, screed, wood, or an existing floating floor?
Are pets, strong sunlight, or underfloor heating important factors?
Does the home need to remain accessible during the work?
Which skirting board, transition, and finish suit the doors and window frames?
