However, it is important to inspect the subfloor carefully. Vinyl follows the base on which it is installed. Grout lines, differences in height, or unevenness may become visible if the floor is not properly prepared.

Yes, vinyl can often be installed over existing tiles. However, this does not automatically mean that every tiled floor is immediately suitable. The quality of the final result depends greatly on the evenness, stability, and structure of the existing floor.
We regularly see tiled floors in Spanish homes with deep grout lines, small differences in height, or slight movement in the subfloor. This does not have to be a problem, provided the necessary preparation is properly assessed beforehand.
Why the subfloor is so important
Vinyl is comfortable and flexible, but for that very reason, the subfloor shows through more quickly than with some other flooring solutions. A tiled floor with clearly defined grout lines may eventually become visible through the vinyl, especially when no suitable preparation has been carried out.
That is why we inspect the existing floor in every property before giving our advice. Sometimes a suitable underlay is sufficient. In other situations, levelling is the better choice to create a smooth, even base.
The aim is not to make the renovation more complicated than necessary, but to ensure that the floor matches the desired result. A beautiful vinyl floor always starts with a sound foundation.
Levelling or a suitable underlay
When the grout lines are deep or the tiled floor is not level enough, we often recommend levelling the floor first. This creates a smoother subfloor and significantly reduces the chance of the underlying pattern showing through.
In some situations, a suitable underlay can also be a good solution. This depends on the type of vinyl, the condition of the tiled floor, how the room is used, and the desired finish.
We assess this on a project-by-project basis. An apartment, bedroom, or holiday home sometimes requires a different approach than a large, open living space with plenty of natural light and intensive daily use.
A comfortable renovation floor
Vinyl is an excellent choice when you want to refresh an existing home quickly and stylishly. The floor feels softer than tiles, reduces walking noise, and immediately adds more warmth to the room.
Especially in Spanish homes with many hard surfaces, vinyl can create a calmer and more comfortable overall look. Think of bedrooms, apartments, guest accommodation, or holiday homes where easy maintenance and comfort are important.

A good choice does not start with colour alone. We also assess the total thickness, protective layer, roll width, indentation resistance, and quality of the subfloor. These factors determine whether a floor remains stable after installation, feels comfortable to walk on, and suits the property's everyday use. Especially in an apartment, holiday home, or villa on the Costa Blanca, sun exposure, temperature fluctuations, and an existing tiled floor can influence the technical choice.
Therefore, do not ask only about the price per square metre. Check what is included in the quote: subfloor preparation, levelling, underlay, adhesive, skirting boards, cutting waste, transport, and installation. Two quotes for the same area may technically include completely different things.
The subfloor determines the end result
A new floor always reflects the quality of the foundation. Loose tiles, deep joints, differences in height, residual moisture, and cracks must be assessed in advance. A level floor is not automatically a suitable floor; stability and adhesion are at least as important. During renovations, we also consider doors, sliding doors, kitchen plinths, and connections to other rooms.
By measuring accurately in advance, we prevent surprises during installation. We record what preparation is needed and which system is technically appropriate. Sometimes direct installation is possible; sometimes levelling or local repairs are necessary. You cannot see this honest distinction on a small colour sample, but you will see it in the final result.

- Does the home need to remain accessible during the work?
- Which skirting board, transition, and finish suit the doors and frames?
