Wrapping tiles in the kitchen or bathroom

Wrapping tiles

A different tile look, without immediately ripping everything out.

A wall with outdated tiles can define the entire room. Film applied to a suitable tiled surface can be an alternative to a major visual renovation. Whether it is a sensible option in your kitchen or bathroom depends on the adhesion, grout lines, edges and the location of the tiles.

A good choice starts here

What should you consider?

Not every surface and not every application requires the same approach. These points determine what looks good and what is technically sensible.

01

Grout lines and relief

A tiled wall is rarely completely flat. Grout depth, tile size and any texture affect the preparation and the final appearance. For a clean result, it must be clear in advance whether the surface can or must be levelled. Working over cracked or loose tiles does not address the underlying cause.

02

Splash water is not the same as a shower

A kitchen backsplash, a wall beside a washbasin and a shower wall are each exposed to different levels of wear and moisture. Connections around taps, corners and sealant joints are also decisive. The suitability of a specific CoverStyl film and method must therefore be assessed for each location. A general statement for all tiles would be too simplistic.

03

Choose the whole, not just the wall

The new wall finish should complement cabinet fronts, worktop, floor and light. Sometimes a calm surface provides the best counterbalance to a striking floor; sometimes a stone or concrete look creates the desired change. We show you how a sample looks in your space before the choice is final.

04

Request an assessment

Photograph both the entire wall and close-ups of grout lines, corners, connections and any damage. Mention whether the wall comes into direct contact with water. This allows us to consult with Envoltura specifically about feasibility and the right finish.

Good to know in advance

The result lies in the details.

The grout line determines the final appearance

With a tiled wall, grout lines are often the difference between a convincing smooth surface and a result in which the original layout remains visible. Grout depth, tile texture and any damage determine whether and how the wall must be prepared. Take close-ups in raking light so that imperfections are clearly visible. The desired appearance is then considered alongside the technical possibilities.

Connections in the kitchen and bathroom

Pay attention to the transitions to the worktop, sink, taps, shower door and ceiling. These are the areas where moisture or movement can affect the finish. A kitchen backsplash and a shower wall exposed directly to water therefore do not require the same approach. The installer must assess the location and chosen reference; a general promise that all tiles can be wrapped would be misleading.

When is another solution better?

If tiles are loose, the wall is damp or the existing finish is not sufficiently stable, this must be repaired first. With a very deep tile texture, the preparation required can be extensive. In that case, it is wise to compare wrapping with painting, panels or new tiles. The best choice follows from the substrate and the desired result, not from a standard answer.

Frequently asked questions

Clarity before you decide

Film can make a big difference, but it cannot solve every technical problem. That is why we always assess the base first.

Will the grout lines remain visible?

That depends on the substrate and preparation. The desired final appearance should be discussed in advance.

Can film be applied over a loose tile?

An unstable substrate must be repaired first; film will not make it stable.

Do the grout lines need to be levelled?

That depends on their depth, the desired smooth result and the method used. The specialist assesses the preparation required.

Can I wrap only part of the tiled wall?

Sometimes this can create a deliberate accent. The transition to the existing tiles must then be incorporated into the design.
