Floor leveling in Spain

A beautiful floor does not start with the floor itself, but with the subfloor beneath it.

This is often underestimated, particularly in Spain.

Many homes on the Costa Blanca have existing tile floors with deep grout joints, differences in height or slight movement in the subfloor. At first glance, such a floor often appears smooth and sturdy, but in practice problems frequently arise later when a new floor is installed without proper preparation.

At Port of Altea , we therefore pay close attention to preparing the subfloor before installing a new PVC floor, parquet floor or vinyl floor.

Why levelling is important

A floor does not have to be extremely uneven to cause problems later.

With many Spanish tile floors, we see deep grout joints, small differences in height, old repairs or a subfloor that is no longer completely level. These uneven areas can later become visible in the final result, especially with PVC floors. Grout joints may show through, seams may become visible and a floor may look or feel uneven.

That is why we always inspect the existing subfloor first before installing a new floor.

PVC over tiles in Spain

In many homes on the Costa Blanca, a new floor is installed over the existing tile floor. This is often perfectly feasible, provided the preparation is done properly.

Simply installing a PVC floor directly without properly checking the subfloor regularly causes problems in the longer term.

That is why we always assess the floor’s flatness, the depth of the grout joints, the adhesion of the existing tiles and the complete floor construction before installing a new floor.

Depending on the situation, we level the existing floor to create a stable, smooth base.

Levelling for dryback PVC

With a glued-down dryback PVC floor, a level subfloor is especially important.

Because the floor is bonded directly to the base beneath it, small unevennesses may later become visible in the final result. That is precisely why levelling is essential for dryback PVC in many situations.

A well-prepared subfloor not only ensures a more attractive final result, but also better adhesion, greater stability and a longer floor lifespan.

Spanish tile floors require a different approach

Many homes in Spain have been built with hard ceramic tile floors that react differently than many subfloors in the Netherlands.

Temperature differences also play a major role. Floors here are exposed to heat, sun exposure and fluctuating humidity every day. That is why we look not only at the new floor, but at the complete build-up of the room.

A floor can only be as good as the foundation beneath it.

Not every floor needs to be fully levelled

Every home is different.

Sometimes a full levelling layer is needed, while in other situations a minor correction is sufficient. This depends on the existing subfloor, the type of flooring and the desired finish.

What should you really look out for when levelling floors in Spain?

A good choice starts with more than just the colour. We also assess the subfloor, intensity of use, maintenance, acoustics, thermal resistance and desired appearance. These factors determine whether a floor remains stable after installation, feels comfortable to walk on and suits the home's everyday use. Especially in an apartment, holiday home or villa on the Costa Blanca, sun exposure, temperature differences and an existing tiled floor can influence the technical choice.

That is why you should not ask only for a price per square metre. Check what is included in the quote: subfloor preparation, levelling, underlay, adhesive, skirting boards, cutting waste, transport and installation. Two quotes for the same area may technically include completely different things.

The subfloor determines the final result

A new floor always depends on the quality of the base. Loose tiles, deep joints, differences in height, residual moisture, and cracks must be assessed in advance. A level floor is not automatically a suitable floor; stability and adhesion are at least as important. During renovations, we also consider doors, sliding doors, kitchen plinths, and connections to other rooms.

By measuring accurately in advance, we prevent surprises during installation. We document what preparation is required and which system is technically appropriate. Sometimes direct installation is possible; in other cases, levelling or local repairs are necessary. You cannot see this honest distinction on a small colour sample, but you will notice it in the final result.

Quality through Dutch suppliers

That does not mean every expensive floor is automatically good: the product must also suit the room and the installation method.

Practical checks before you decide

Which rooms are included, and how intensively will they be used?
Is there currently tile flooring, screed, wood, or an existing floating floor?
Are pets, strong sunlight, or underfloor heating important factors?
Does the home need to remain accessible during the work?
Which skirting board, transition, and finish suit the doors and window frames?
