Why size changes everything

A rug that is too small floats like a detached island between the furniture. The right size connects the sofa, armchairs or dining table and makes the room look calmer. We consider the complete furniture arrangement, clear walking routes and the distance from walls and doors.

In a seating area, at least the front legs of the main furniture pieces usually stand on the rug. Under a dining table, there should be enough space around it to pull chairs back without them falling off the edge. Made-to-measure prevents you from having to choose between slightly too small and unnecessarily large.

Standard size or custom rug

A standard size is quick and can work perfectly well with a simple arrangement. Custom sizing becomes attractive with wide sofas, long dining tables, organic spaces or when a specific border of exposed floor is desired. Cut-outs and unusual shapes may also be possible, depending on the collection and finish.

We measure the desired area and can temporarily mark the outline on the floor. This allows you to see how the size will work before ordering. Production dimensions, tolerances and edge finishing are recorded clearly.

Wool, synthetic or natural fibre

Wool feels comfortable, is resilient and has a rich appearance. Synthetic fibre can be practical for intensive use and targeted stain treatment. Sisal and other natural fibres add texture but react differently to moisture and stains. No material is automatically the winner for every room.

We compare pile, density, backing, usage class and cleaning advice. True quality is not determined solely by the fibre name or total weight; construction and suitability for the intended use are at least as important.

High-pile, low-pile and textured rugs

High-pile rugs provide softness and visual warmth but require more maintenance and are less practical where chairs are moved frequently. Low-pile qualities look calmer and are easier to vacuum. Loop, cut pile and mixed textures react differently to footprints, light and pets.

View a sample both straight on and from different directions. Pile direction and sunlight can make a colour appear much lighter or darker. This is normal material behaviour, not a colour-changing trick by the rug.

Choosing colour in Spanish light

Bright daylight makes colours look different from those in a catalogue or on a phone screen. We place samples alongside the floor, sofa and curtain fabric and assess warm and cool undertones. A neutral rug does not have to match the floor exactly; controlled contrast often adds more depth.

In homes with lots of sand, children or pets, a mottled texture can be more practical than a plain light shade. Practical does not automatically mean dark, however: on very dark rugs, light hair and dust are actually visible sooner.

Underfloor heating, PVC and tiled floors

A rug always creates some thermal resistance. With underfloor heating, we consider the material, backing, pile and covered area and follow the requirements of the flooring and heating system. A very thick rug with dense backing can restrict heat transfer more significantly.

On smooth PVC or tiles, an anti-slip underlay may be necessary. This underlay must be suitable for the particular floor and must not cause plasticiser migration or discolouration. Also check and clean underneath the rug; trapped sand can otherwise act like sandpaper.

Pets and everyday maintenance

With dogs and cats, pile height, loop construction, colour and cleanability are important. Long, loose loops can be more vulnerable to claws. A mottled low-pile quality is often easier to manage with hair and intensive use, but the best choice depends on the animal and the room.

Vacuum according to the material advice, blot stains immediately and do not rub aggressively. Do not use a random all-purpose cleaner: it can leave residue, cause discolouration or create a larger ring. Test every product first in an inconspicuous area and arrange professional cleaning promptly for valuable materials.

Acoustics and comfort

A rug absorbs some reflected sound and makes hard interiors more comfortable. The effect depends on the surface area, pile, underlay and the rest of the room. One small rug will not solve a complete acoustic problem, but a generous size can make voices and footsteps noticeably softer.

What determines the price?

Price is determined by the material, construction, dimensions, shape, edge finishing and brand or collection. With custom sizing, the actual surface area is taken into account and minimum production dimensions may apply. Organic contours and hand finishing require a different production process from a straight standard size.

A good quotation specifies the quality, colour, exact dimensions, shape, finish and any anti-slip underlay. This allows you to compare the same product rather than just a price per square metre while the most important details are still missing.
