Removing sand from carpet, rug, and floor

Sand may seem harmless, but it is one of the biggest causes of unnecessary wear on floors and carpets. Especially on the Costa Blanca, you can unknowingly bring it inside on shoes, flip-flops, clothing, beach bags, and pets.

The problem is simple: sand grains are hard and sharp. When you walk over them or move them across the floor while cleaning, they essentially act like very fine sandpaper.

That is why there is one important rule when dealing with sand:

Remove it dry first, and only then clean.

What types of dirt does this include?

You can use this approach for:

• beach sand
• dry sand
• dust
• soil and garden soil
• dried mud
• clay
• dirt brought inside on shoes
• sand and pet dirt

With wet soil or mud, it is usually better to let the dirt dry first before vacuuming.

Why can sand damage your floor?

Sand consists of small, hard grains that:

• can cause scratches on floors;
• sink deep between carpet fibers;
• accumulate in joints and textured surfaces;
• can gradually damage a floor's protective layer;
• make carpets and rugs look dull and worn more quickly.

If you then walk over the sand or run a mop over it, you move those hard grains across the surface.

So that is exactly what you want to avoid.

Removing sand from carpet or rug

In carpets and rugs, sand easily sinks down between the fibers. Especially in high-pile rugs, a considerable amount of sand can be hidden without being immediately visible.

How to tackle it

1. Is the sand or soil wet? Let it dry completely first.
2. Carefully remove larger loose pieces.
3. Vacuum the carpet or rug thoroughly.
4. Vacuum in multiple directions so that sand comes loose from between the fibers.
5. Repeat until you can hardly hear or see any more sand being vacuumed up.
6. Does the carpet still look dull or dirty afterward? Then treat it with James Interior Cleaner according to the instructions for use.

With a thick rug, vacuuming once may not be enough. Sand sinks to the bottom of the material.

Removing sand from a high-pile rug

With high-pile rugs, sand can get particularly deep between the fibers.

Work slowly with the vacuum cleaner and go over the surface several times in different directions.

Only use a cleaning product once as many loose grains of sand as possible have been removed. Otherwise, you combine moisture with sand, making it harder to clean.

Removing sand from PVC, LVT, or SPC

With PVC, LVT, and SPC, preventing scratches is especially important.

How to tackle it

1. Walk over the sand as little as possible before cleaning.
2. Remove the sand with a vacuum cleaner fitted with a suitable soft floor brush.
3. Pay particular attention to seams and floor textures.
4. Only mop the floor once all loose grains have been removed.

Do not run a wet mop directly over a sandy floor. This will simply drag the grains of sand across the surface.

Removing sand from laminate flooring

With laminate flooring, always remove sand dry first.

How to do it

1. Vacuum with a soft floor brush.
2. Make sure there is no loose sand left along the skirting boards or between the seams.
3. Then clean the floor with a slightly damp method.
4. Use as little water as possible.

Sand, especially combined with heavy foot traffic, can cause small scratches and wear over time.

Removing sand from tiles or natural stone

Ceramic tiles can be quite durable, but sand can accumulate in grout lines and textured surfaces.

Therefore, first remove all loose dirt with a vacuum cleaner or soft broom, and only then clean the floor with a damp method.

For natural stone, it is advisable to use a cleaning product suitable for the type of stone in question.

Removing sand from a sofa or upholstery

Sand can also get into sofas, chairs, and other upholstery, for example through clothing, children, or pets.

How to tackle it

1. Let damp dirt or sand dry first.
2. Vacuum the surface with an upholstery attachment.
3. Work slowly in different directions.
4. Pay extra attention to seams, folds, and crevices.
5. Is the fabric still dull or dirty afterward? Then use James Interior Cleaner according to the instructions for use.

Do not immediately wipe sand with a wet cloth. This can actually work the dirt further into the fabric.

Preventing beach sand in the home

Especially in a home on the Costa Blanca, avoiding it completely is difficult, but you can significantly reduce the amount of sand indoors.

A few simple measures can help:

• use a good doormat;
• leave beach shoes at the entrance;
• shake out beach towels and bags outside;
• vacuum regularly near entrances and patio doors;
• remove sand before mopping;
• vacuum rugs more often during beach season.

A few minutes of dry cleaning can prevent considerable wear and tear in the long run.

What is better not to do?

When dealing with sand and dirt, it is better not to:

• start mopping immediately;
• scrub hard;
• wipe over loose sand grains with a wet cloth;
• use a hard brush on delicate floors;
• rub wet mud further into the carpet;
• use cleaning products before the loose sand has been removed.

How do I get sand out of a rug?

Why does my carpet still look dull after vacuuming?
