A floor can be beautiful, but without good skirting boards the overall look often seems unfinished.
Skirting boards create a neat transition between the floor and wall and give your interior a sleek, finished look. Yet many homes in Spain pay little attention to them.
A shame, because this detail is precisely what makes the difference between “fine” and truly good.
Why skirting boards are important
Skirting boards do more than just look good.
They:
- protect the lower part of the wall from knocks and dirt
- neatly conceal the joints between the floor and wall
- create a calm and finished look
Without skirting boards, even an expensive floor often looks unfinished.
Different heights: what suits your home?
The height of the skirting board largely determines its appearance.
Tall skirting boards (8–12 cm or taller)
Create a luxurious, calm look. Ideal for modern, sleekly finished interiors.
Low skirting boards (5–7 cm)
Subtle and less prominent. Suitable if you want the floor to take center stage.
In Spain, many people choose slightly taller skirting boards because walls are often not perfectly straight.
Colors: match or contrast?
Skirting boards do not always have to be white, although this remains the most popular option.
White skirting boards
Timeless and sleek. Suits almost any interior.
Floor color
Creates a calm, continuous look.
Contrasting skirting boards
They can make a statement, for example in black or anthracite.
The choice depends on how understated or distinctive you want your interior to be.
Materials: what is the best choice?
Various materials are available, but they are not all equally suitable.
MDF skirting boards (most commonly used)
Sleek, dimensionally stable, and easy to finish. Ideal for most homes.
Solid wood
A natural appearance, but more susceptible to movement and often more expensive.
Plastic skirting boards
Moisture-resistant, but often less sleek in appearance.
What are moisture-resistant V313 MDF skirting boards?
We use moisture-resistant MDF skirting boards (V313) as standard.
These skirting boards are made with waterproof adhesive under high pressure, making them more resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations.
Perfect for the Spanish climate.
Important:
V313 means moisture-resistant, not waterproof.
They can withstand:
- mopping
- splashing water
- humidity
However, prolonged exposure to moisture must always be avoided.
Styles and finishes
Skirting boards are available in different styles:
Straight-edged skirting boards
Modern and minimalist
Decorative skirting boards (classic profile)
More character and detail
Rounded skirting boards
Softer and more subtle
For the finish, you can choose:
- primed (to be painted with a finishing coat)
- factory-lacquered (smoother and ready to install)
- 2K lacquered (extra strong and scratch-resistant)
Skirting boards in Spain: what should you consider?
In Spain, walls are often less straight, and temperature fluctuations are greater.
That is why the skirting board itself is not the only important factor; the installation and finishing are even more important.
We always ensure:
- ne smoothly installed skirting boards
- neatly caulked joints
- neat corners and connections
- durable finish
Because a skirting board is only as good as its finish.
The finishing touch
Skirting boards may seem like a small detail, but they largely determine how neat and finished your home looks.
With the right choice of height, colour and material, you can turn a beautiful floor into a complete whole.

How do you apply this to your own home?
For skirting boards in the home: small detail, big difference (and how to choose the right one), the situation in the property is always decisive. Take photos in daylight, note the measurements and record what is currently present on the floor or in front of the window. Also describe who uses the room, how often the property is occupied and which problems you specifically want to solve. This turns general advice into a practical plan.
Do not compare materials based on appearance alone. Ask about the technical composition, maintenance, expected lifespan and preparation required. A lower-priced product may ultimately cost more if the necessary groundwork has not been included or the chosen design is not suited to everyday use.
Practical checklist before ordering
- Check the subfloor, window construction or installation location instead of relying only on approximate measurements.
- View actual samples in the light of the room and at different times of day.
- Record the colour, design, direction, operation and finish in writing.
- Ask exactly which work and materials are included in the price.
- Schedule other trades in the right order so that new work is not damaged immediately.
Common mistake: committing to a single solution too early
An online example can provide inspiration, but says nothing about your subfloor, dimensions, sun exposure or intended use. Therefore, start with the function and technical requirements. Only then choose the final colour and appearance. This prevents compromises during installation and makes quotations easier to compare.
At Port of Altea, we combine product advice with measuring and professional installation. This means choices are not made separately from the installation, and details such as skirting boards, profiles, seams, pack height or door clearance can be checked in advance.
