PVC, LVT or SPC? This is what the same floor is called in different countries

PVC, LVT of SPC? Zo heet dezelfde vloer in verschillende landen

When looking for a new floor, you quickly encounter different terms: PVC, LVT, SPC… and sometimes even more variants.

For many people, it seems as if these are completely different floors. In reality, it is often the same type of floor but with a different name depending on the country or technical construction.

In this article, we explain the difference and put an end to the confusion.

PVC floor: the name we use in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, we almost always refer to a PVC floor.

This is a collective term for plastic floors that consist of multiple layers and are known for their durability, water resistance, and ease of maintenance.

PVC floors are available in various types, such as:

  • dryback (glue-down PVC)
  • click PVC
  • herringbone, wood look, and tile look

LVT: the English term for the same type of floor
In English-speaking countries, the term LVT is usually used.

LVT stands for Luxury Vinyl Tiles.

This literally means luxury vinyl tiles, but in practice, LVT includes both planks and tiles and largely corresponds to what we call PVC in the Netherlands.

SPC: the stiffer variant you often see in Spain
In Spain, you often come across the term SPC.

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite.

This type of floor has a stiffer core and falls under vinyl floors. SPC is often used as a click floor and is extra stable, making it suitable for various subfloors.

That is why this term is more commonly used in Spain, while in the Netherlands everything is classified under PVC.

And what about in Germany?
In Germany, people usually talk about:

  • Vinylboden (general term)
  • Designboden (more marketing-oriented)

Sometimes you also see LVT or SPC mentioned, but “Vinylboden” is the most commonly used term.

Why are there so many different names?
The different names often cause confusion but usually relate to:

  • language differences
  • marketing terms
  • technical variations in construction

The basis remains the same: a strong, low-maintenance, and water-resistant floor.

What is more important than the name?
The name of the floor is ultimately less important than the quality and the correct application.

Pay special attention to:

  • the quality of the material
  • the thickness of the wear layer
  • the subfloor and installation
  • the use of the space

A well-chosen and professionally installed floor makes the difference, whether it is called PVC, LVT, or SPC.
