Baseboards in the house: small detail, big difference (and how to choose the right one)

Plinten in huis: klein detail, groot verschil (en hoe je de juiste kiest)

A floor can be beautiful, but without good baseboards, the whole often looks unfinished.

Baseboards provide a neat transition between floor and wall and give your interior a sleek, finished look. Yet, in many homes in Spain, little attention is paid to them.

A shame, because this detail makes the difference between “okay” and really good.

Why baseboards are important

Baseboards do more than just look good.

They:

  • protect the lower part of the wall from bumps and dirt
  • neatly cover gaps between floor and wall
  • provide a calm and finished appearance

Without baseboards, even an expensive floor often looks unfinished.

Different heights: what suits your home?

The height of the baseboard largely determines the appearance.

High baseboards (8–12 cm or higher)
Provide a luxurious and calm appearance. Ideal for modern and neatly finished interiors.

Low baseboards (5–7 cm)
Subtle and less noticeable. Suitable if you want the floor to take center stage.

In Spain, many people choose slightly higher baseboards because walls are often not perfectly straight.

Colors: match or contrast?

Baseboards don’t always have to be white, although that remains the most chosen option.

White baseboards
Timeless and sleek. Fits in almost any interior.

Color of the floor
Creates a calm and continuous whole.

Contrasting baseboards
They can actually make a statement, for example black or anthracite.

The choice depends on how calm or pronounced you want your interior to be.

Materials: what is the best choice?

There are various materials available, but not all are equally suitable.

MDF baseboards (most used)
Sleek, dimensionally stable, and easy to finish. Ideal for most homes.

Solid wood
Natural appearance, but more sensitive to movement and often more expensive.

Plastic baseboards
Moisture resistant, but often less sleek in appearance.

What are moisture-resistant V313 MDF baseboards?

We standardly work with moisture-resistant MDF baseboards (V313).

These baseboards are produced with waterproof glue and under high pressure, making them more resistant to moisture and temperature fluctuations.

Perfect for the Spanish climate.

Important:
V313 means moisture resistant, not waterproof.

They tolerate well:

  • mopping
  • splash water
  • humidity

But prolonged wetness must always be avoided.

Models and finishes

Baseboards come in different models:

Sleek straight baseboards
Modern and minimalist

Decorative baseboards (classic profile)
More character and detail

Rounded baseboards
Softer and subtler

In terms of finish, you can choose:

  • primed (paint yourself)
  • factory lacquered (sleeker and ready immediately)
  • 2K lacquered (extra strong and scratch-resistant)

Baseboards in Spain: what should you watch out for?

In Spain, walls are often less even and there are larger temperature differences.

That’s why not only the baseboard is important, but especially the installation and finishing.

We always ensure:

  • precisely installed baseboards
  • neatly sealed seams
  • clean corners and joints
  • durable finish

Because a baseboard is only as good as its finish.

The finishing touch

Baseboards may seem like a small detail, but they largely determine how neat and well-maintained your home looks.

With the right choice in height, color, and material, you turn a beautiful floor into a complete whole.
